Responsibilities & Context

BRAC is a global development organisation, founded in Bangladesh, that works in partnership with over 100 million people worldwide to challenge inequality and poverty by creating sustainable opportunities for empowerment and growth.

As part of its commitment to ensuring safe and sustainable water access for all, BRAC is inviting applications from passionate and qualified professionals for the position of Senior Technical Specialist, WASH under the Equitable and Sustainable WASH Services in Bangladesh Delta Plan Hotspots (2022–2026) project.

This position will contribute to a major initiative focused on improving water service delivery in Bangladesh’s coastal belt—home to nearly one-fourth of the nation’s population—where water insecurity has emerged as one of the most pressing climate challenges. The assignment is expected to commence in late 2025 for a duration of one year.

About the Project

The Equitable and Sustainable WASH Services in Bangladesh Delta Plan Hotspots 2022–2026 project, funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (EKN), aims to strengthen access to safe and sustainable drinking water for climate-vulnerable communities. Drawing on experience from other water-insecure contexts, the project focuses on Bangladesh’s coastal districts, where people face severe water scarcity due to salinity intrusion, arsenic and iron contamination, and recurrent tidal flooding.

Although various technologies—such as hand pumps, pond sand filters, rainwater harvesting systems, reverse osmosis (RO), and piped water—are available, around 30–40% of rural water points remain non-functional because of inadequate operation and maintenance, limited technical expertise, and low community ownership.

To overcome these challenges, BRAC, in collaboration with TETRA, IRC Netherlands, and Aqua for All, is developing an integrated, market-driven model to build climate-resilient, inclusive, and financially sustainable water services for coastal and water-stressed populations.

About the Role

The Senior Technical Specialist (WASH) will provide technical leadership in designing and implementing sustainable reverse osmosis (RO) brine management solutions that align with WASH, environmental, and climate resilience objectives. The role will promote collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, academia, and local communities while ensuring gender-sensitive and inclusive approaches. The incumbent will also provide technical support, build capacity, and advocate for resilient WASH and livelihood outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead field trials for innovative brine management technologies, ensuring technical soundness, community acceptance, and sustainability.

  • Design and implement aquaculture-based models for RO brine reuse and management tailored to coastal settings.

  • Conduct baseline studies on aquaculture practices, RO brine characteristics, and ecosystem impacts to guide evidence-based interventions.

  • Monitor and document project outcomes through reports, case studies, and scientific publications to contribute to policy dialogue and sector learning.

  • Evaluate the environmental, water quality, sustainability, and livelihood outcomes of brine management and aquaculture interventions.

  • Foster partnerships and engagement with government agencies, private sector actors, academic institutions, NGOs, and communities, ensuring inclusive and gender-responsive collaboration.

  • Provide technical oversight, guidance, and training on brine minimisation, reuse, environmental compliance, and WASH implementation.

  • Support research, pilot initiatives, proposal development, and other activities contributing to BRAC’s strategic WASH objectives.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • Ensure the protection of programme participants, staff, and all individuals connected to BRAC from harm, abuse, neglect, harassment, and exploitation, including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA).

  • Serve as a key source of guidance and support on safeguarding to help establish and maintain a safe and respectful working environment.

  • Promote and reinforce safeguarding policies among team members, ensuring their integration into all aspects of work.

  • Follow established safeguarding reporting procedures in case of any incidents and encourage others to do the same.
