Location: WaterAid Bangladesh Country Office, Dhaka, Bangladesh
WaterAid Bangladesh, as a leading international NGO specializing in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), recognizes the deep connection between WASH and health. Over the years, it has implemented a range of health-related WASH initiatives at the grassroots level — from upgrading WASH facilities at community clinics and Upazila Health Complexes to establishing a dedicated WASH Cell within the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and supporting the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other efforts include piloting medical waste management at Phulchari UHC and installing rainwater harvesting systems in coastal health centers and community clinics. However, as WaterAid Bangladesh shifts its focus toward Universal Access and Climate Change, the critical integration of health into WASH programming has received less attention. Given that many of the organization’s new projects now show measurable health benefits as outcomes of WASH interventions, it’s clear that greater emphasis on this linkage is needed.
These efforts also align with WaterAid’s global goal #2: “Prioritize WASH across the health sector to improve public health.” This role will be key in identifying and strengthening those connections.
